NEW VOLLEYBALL CALENDAR PRINCIPLES ADOPTED IN BUILD UP TO PARIS 2024

Lausanne, Switzerland, December 20, 2019 – The FIVB Board of Administration (BOA) has approved plans for the next volleyball calendar, which outlines the FIVB’s volleyball events for the next Olympic cycle leading up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

In April 2019, the BOA established a working group in order to optimise the calendar, prioritising welfare of the athletes based on data analysis of key volleyball events. The working group also utilised recommendations and feedback from clubs, National Federations, Continental Confederations and the FIVB Athletes’ Commission.

Earlier this month, the FIVB Executive Committee met and ratified the working group’s proposal to reduce the number of events while creating additional value – “Less is More” – before the BOA officially approved the new principles.

The planned calendar outlines the official volleyball events in 2021-2024. The official events, as defined by the BOA, are the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the 2022 World Championships, the annual Volleyball Nations League, the Continental Championships 2021 and 2023, and their direct qualifying events. The calendar also includes the clubs’ annual season – including national, continental and international competition.

The precise dates of the new 2021-2024 competition calendar will be published in the first quarter of 2020.

FIVB President Ary S Graça Fᵒ said:

“Our goal was to streamline the calendar in the best interests of the athletes. Their health and well-being is our number one priority and we want to allow enough recovery time so that they can perform at their best.

“The working group provided a comprehensive overview of the plan for the next few years and I believe that this new calendar will support us to deliver the highest quality events to fans around the world.”

The Board also approved updates to the qualification process for some of its major events, which will incorporate the new volleyball world ranking system. From next year, the qualification process for the FIVB World Championships and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be improved to ensure equal opportunities for all national teams.
