OCA DISCUSSES TASHKENT-2025 YOUTH ASIAN GAMES SPORTS FACILITIES WITH UZBEKISTAN NOC LEADERS

The project for the construction of the fifth Youth Asian Games sports facilities including the Olympic Village in Uzbekistan’s capital city Tashkent has been discussed in the recent bilateral meeting between OCA and Uzbekistan NOC leaders.

Mr Husain Al Musallam, Director General of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and President of the International Swimming Federation (officially renamed World Aquatics in January 2023), and Mr Haidar Farman, OCA’s Asian Games Director and President of the International Kurash Association, arrived in Tashkent for discussion with the Uzbekistan NOC on the preparation and operations for the Youth Asian Games, a multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from all over Asia. The fifth edition of the sports event is due to take place in Tashkent in 2025.

The Uzbekistan sports leaders who attended the meeting comprised Youth Policy and Sports Minister Mr Adkham Ikramov, his First Deputy Mr Alisher Sadullayev, NOC Secretary General Mr Oybek Kasimov, NOC Deputy Chairman Mr Azizjon Kamilov, Deputy Minister of Construction Mr Shukrullobek Jahongirov and representatives of the Chinese company CAMCE.

One of the key topics raised for discussion during the meeting was the project of sports facilities due to be constructed in the country’s preparation for the fifth Youth Asian Games.

Singapore hosted the inaugural edition of the Youth Asian Games in 2009, with Nanjing, China playing host to the 2013 edition. The third edition in 2017 had been cancelled by OCA, while the COVID-19 pandemic was the main reason for OCA to cancel the fourth edition in 2021.

The fifth edition in Uzbekistan is due to take place in 2025, with volleyball expected to make its debut as medal sporting event in Tashkent and beach volleyball taken back for contest.

Since the Games inception in 2009, only beach volleyball was held in Singapore and Thailand made a clean sweep of both gold medals on offer in that sports event. The sports discipline was not included in the 2013 edition in Nanjing. However, beach volleyball was due to be included in the 2021 edition but the Games had been eventually cancelled.
