PHILIPPINES POST 7th PLACE FINISH IN AVC CHALLENGE CUP

Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, June 25, 2023 – Philippines completed their first-ever participation in the competition history of the AVC Challenge Cup for Women by celebrating a 7th place finish. They defeated Uzbekistan, 3-1 (25-14, 13-25, 25-18, 25-18) on Sunday afternoon at the Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gresik Gymnasium.

Faith Nisperos led the charge with 19 points in the victory. Shaya Adorador and captain Aiza Pontillas likewise dealt double-digits, with 15 points and 12 points respectively.

Adorador commented “This was our goal to, at least, finish the tournament with a win. We wanted to bring home the feeling of victory. A win is still a win as our coach says.

“We may not have achieved the goal of entering the final four, we were just a step away from that, but we had to move forward and focus on the match against Uzbekistan. We cannot stop working and helping one another in this team.”

The Philippines’ numbers showed their advantage in nearly all scoring skills, posting 50 attacks, 9 blocks and 6 service winners.

Uzbekistan, however, managed to steal a set away, with Boymirzayeva Dilnoza running the middle effectively.

Philippines took grip of their momentum upon their opponents’ errors to complete a 3-1 win and land in 7th place.

With the revised format of the AVC Challenge Cup, all participating are attributed world ranking points.

The Philippines made a leap into the FIVB’s Top 70 teams with their participation in Indonesia.

Adorador added “I am so grateful for this honor to be part of the team that helped toward the world ranking. I have to be grateful as well to the entire team, who have worked hard and have shown their commitment and dedication to the assignment to represent the country.”

Philippines will continue their preparation to compete in the next scheduled events such as 3rd SEA V. League in Thailand and Vietnam, 22nd Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship in Thailand and 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022.
