Police, which narrowly missed out on the Qatar Volleyball League and Qatar Cup titles, ensured they finished the season on a high as the League runners-up and Qatar Cup semifinalists captured the Amir Cup on Wednesday after prevailing 25-18, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20 against Al-Arabi in the final of the season-ending competition.

Al-Arabi, expected to offer a stiff challenge to their opponents and produce their impressive run in the tournament with wins over League champions Al-Rayyan and strong contenders Al-Ahli, faltered in the final.

Police’s foreign professionals – Estonian Oliver Venno, Bulgarian Georgiev Borislav and Latvian Smits Kirstap – proved too good for Al-Arabi.

Al Arabi’s Renan Ribeiro, Bassam Ahmed and Ibrahim, the mainstays of the Qatar national team, battled spiritedly, but came up second best against their opponents who proved superior on the day.

Ali bin Ghanem Al Kuwari, President of the Qatar Volleyball Association, expressed his happiness over the overall level of various competitions during the season.

“We witnessed many close contests with impressive performances from all the clubs, not just the top few. The fact that we’ve different winners in major competitions indicate the rising standard of the game in the country and I’m sure we’ll see more and more exciting and keenly-contested matches in the next season,” he said.

Mohammed Yousef Al Mana, First Vice-President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, presented the trophies to the winners and runners-up during the awards presentation.
