RESULTS OF HANGZHOU 2022 ASIAN GAMES DRAWING OF LOTS UNVEILED

Reigning champions and world No.6 China, fresh from capturing unprecedented silver medal at the recent FIVB Volleyball Nations League, have been handed a comfortable draw for the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022.

The drawing of lots ceremony was live streamed through hangzhou2022.cn, the official website of the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games 2022, with Honorary Life Vice President and Executive Director of AVC Mr Shanrit Wongprasert, assisted by Mr Dong Wei from the Chinese Volleyball Association, conducting the drawing of lots for both men’s and women’s events in the 19th Asiad due to be held in Hangzhou, China between September 19 and October 7, 2023.

Ahead of the drawing ceremony, Mr Shanrit informed all participants that seedings have been in accordance with the results of the previous edition of the Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2018. A total of 13 women’s teams confirmed their participation in the Hangzhou Games.

In the women’s event, eight teams were seeded in serpentine system in Pools A, B, C and D, starting with hosts China and followed by the seven best teams in Jakarta.

According to results of the drawing of lots, defending and eight-time champions China are in Pool A together with India and Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea), while Pool B consists of world No.15 Thailand, which picked up silver medal at the previous Games, Chinese Taipei and Mongolia.

Pool C features world No.35 Korea (Republic of Korea), which reigned supreme when they hosted the 17th edition in Incheon, Vietnam and Nepal, while Kazakhstan, Afghanistan and Hong Kong China joined Japan, world No.8 and consecutive two-time Asian champions, in Pool D.

In the men’s event, a strong field of 19 teams have submitted their entries for the 19th Asian Games Volleyball Tournament. Like the women’s draw, seedings have also been in accordance with the previous results of those teams in the Jakarta Games in 2018.

Pool A consists of hosts China, the AVC Cup for Men winners last year in Thailand and 16th place at the recent FIVB Volleyball Nations League, joined by Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

Defending and consecutive two-time champions Iran, current world No.10 which had captured back-to-back Asian titles, are in Pool B with Nepal and Bahrain, with Pool D featuring world No.44 Chinese Taipei, Pakistan and Mongolia.

Pool E comprises world No.21 Qatar, AVC Challenge Cup champions Thailand and Hong Kong China, while world No.5 Japan, which made history by finishing the podium for the first time at the recent FIVB Volleyball Nations League, are in Pool F together with Indonesia, Philippines and Afghanistan.

As four Asian women’s teams consisting of China, Japan, Thailand and Korea are set to strut their stuff in the Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament from September 16 to 24 (Pool A in China, Pool B in Japan and Pool C in Poland), the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games Volleyball Tournament will kick off in the men’s event on September 19 and continue through September 26, followed by the women’s competition from September 28 to October 7.

The Men’s Olympic Qualification Tournament in Brazil (Pool A), Japan (Pool B) and China (Pool C) will also see four Asian teams comprising Japan, China, Iran and Qatar pitted against the world’s strong teams from September 30 to October 8.

Meanwhile, ahead of the drawing of lots of the Hangzhou Asian Games 2022 Volleyball Tournament, the 2nd session of the 19th Asian Games Technical Delegate Conference was convened with the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (HAGOC) introducing the preparation work for the Games in detail, with a particular focus on services and policies regarding catering, accommodation, transport, logistics, security, and accreditation, which are also concerns of technical officials.
