RUSSIA, POLAND, CHINA AND TURKEY IN THE TOP 8 OF THE WU20 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Leon, Mexico, July 14, 2019 – The first round is over and the teams showed what they were capable of on the court. The leaders of Pools B and C are on their way to Aguascalientes to play the second round of the Women’s U20 World Championship.

Pool B

Poland got the first ticket for Pool B beating a powerful Peru 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-20). Poland were determined to get the victory over a hesitant Peru, who fought to the end but came short of qualifying to the second round in Aguascalientes. Weronika Centka as outside hitter gave 18 points to Poland and Kiara Montes of Peru got 13 spikes.

After getting the last ticket for pool B, China will go to Aguascalientes for the second round. The match against Egypt was a tough game for China, the four-time African champions showed their best game against the current U20 champions. China won in straight sets (25-18, 25-20, 25-13). Egypt’s Aliaa Helal reached 13 points and with 16 points each, Wenhan Che and Yizhu Wang of China were the best scorers of the match.

Pool C

Another breathtaking match of five sets in Pool C, the third game for Turkey, who finished the round with a record of 2-1 and qualified to the next stage as the second placed team of the group. Russia goes to Aguascalientes undefeated looking for the finals.

Turkey had a tough start but later their confidence and experience enabled them to overcome their difficulties and get the 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 25-23, 16-25, 15-8) win over Serbia who had some issues with their outside hitters. Derya Cebecioglu with 23 points and Yaprak Erkek with 21 guided Turkey. For Serbia, Milica Milunovic scored 21 points.

Russia showed why they are one of the strongest teams at the Women’s U20 World Championship keeping the match under control and reaching a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-20) victory over Argentina. The South Americans played hard and the people recognized their good game as well. Angeles Ligorria scored 10 points for Argentina and for Russia it was Valerya Shevchuk who was the best scorer of the team and of the match with 17 points.

The next round will begin this Tuesday at 12:30 in Aguascalientes and Leon.
