Tehran, Iran, December 22, 2020 – The Week Two encounters of Iran Women’s Premier League in Qazvin and Tehran came to a close on Monday, with Tehran Saipa and Tehran Paykan topping respective Pool A and Pool B at the end of the two-week preliminaries, iranvolleyball.com reported on Tuesday.
In Week 2, participating teams had been divided into two pools of four teams each to compete in a single round robin. Pool A in Qazvin comprised Saipa, Qazvin Shahrdari, Exson and Babol Sarvghamatan, while Pool B in Tehran featured Zob Ahan, Eslamshahr Khojasteh, Paykan and Fars Setaregan.
Tehran Saipa and Zob Ahan made a clean sweep of three victories in Pool A and Pool B respectively, but Zob Ahan could not spot them on the top of Pool B as Tehran Paykan, which went down 2-3 in a closely-contested match against them, relegated Zob Ahan to the second place of the pool.
At the conclusion of the two-week preliminaries, Tehran Saipa emerged as the only team not to lose a match to their respective rivals. They had 18 points to top Pool A, while Qazvin Shahrdari claimed 11 points from 4 wins against 2 losses to finish second. Exson (7 points) and winless Babol Sarvghamatan came in third and fourth places respectively.
In Pool B, Tehran Paykan collected 16 points from 5 wins against one loss to capture the pole position, followed by Esfahan Zob Ahan with 14 points from 5 wins against one loss. Eslamshahr Khojasteh (6 points) and winless Fars Setaregan finished third and fourth positions respectively.
With only top two teams of each pool advancing, Tehran Saipa and Qazvin Shahrdari from Pool A and Tehran Paykan and Esfahan Zob Ahan from Pool B earned their berths to contest the next round, while the lower-ranked teams of the standing will fight for the 5th-8th places.
