Bariloche, Argentina, July 30, 2019 – Snow volleyball teams from around the world have gathered in the city of Bariloche, Argentina, to compete in the third and final stage of the inaugural FIVB Snow Volleyball World Tour which begins on Friday.
After substantial growth, the FIVB launched its first ever Snow Volleyball World Tour earlier this year, with previous legs of the tour held in Austria’s Wagrain-Kleinarl and Italy’s Plan de Corones / Kronplatz. Bariloche, Rio Negro will be the first time that an official FIVB Snow Volleyball event is staged outside of Europe.
The growth of the Tour highlights the FIVB’s mission to promote international inclusivity through volleyball. Snow volleyball allows for teams from warmer climates to compete in a winter sport and opens new audiences to play and watch volleyball. This is an important part of the FIVB’s mission in developing the sport of volleyball all over the world. The first edition of the FIVB Snow Volleyball World Tour has seen teams from Africa and South America, including hosts Argentina, engage with the discipline.
Teams from Austria, Russia, USA and Argentina have all made it to the podium so far, and it will up to the teams from Brazil, Cameroon, Japan, South Africa, Italy and Sweden to try and write their own names into the history books by securing a win on the Tour.
“As we look to become the world’s number one family sport, snow volleyball is another example of us opening up the sport to all,” FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° said. “We are seeing teams from all five of our Continental Confederations – this proves that there is an appetite for the discipline around the world.
“In the previous two women’s events, Argentina secured their first snow volleyball medals, and this is from a country that has never won an Olympic Winter Games medal. It would be great to see them get gold in front of a home crowd!”
The final leg of the 2019 FIVB Snow Volleyball World Tour begins on August 2 in Bariloche, Argentina. Follow all the action on the FIVB’s YouTube channel and join in the conversation on Twitter using the hashtag #SnowVB.
