Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, August 5, 2019 – Sri Lanka outclassed Hong Kong China in thrilling straights sets 25-17, 25-22, 25-22 to keep high hopes of advancing to the next round alive in the SMM 3rd Asian Men’s U23 Volleyball Championship at Hall B, the Wunna Theikdi Indoor Stadium here on Monday.
Sri Lanka got off to a solid start with a comfortable 25-17 win in the opening set, but Hong Kong China clawed their way back to challenge the rivals seriously in the second set. However, with Kavindu Chandrasiri and the 191cm-tall Nuwan Jayalath joining forces in puncturing the rivals’ defence, Sri Lanka turned the tire and took the competitive set 25-22 for a 2-0 advantage.
Hong Kong China, which went down 1-3 to Australia the previous match, tried hard to stage a comeback but their efforts were in vain. Sri Lanka captured the closely-contested set 25-22 and match.
Kavindu Chandrasiri scored a team-high 13 points for Sri Lanka, 11 of them through devastating attacks, while Yin Leung Ho led Hong Kong China with 12 points.
“We badly wanted to win this match in straight sets because we still have to wait for the match result of Australia and Myanmar. In this match, we pressured Hong Kong China with our good blocks because they are good at their serves and reception. My players did not perform as good as yesterday but they finally gained the favorable result,” Sri Lanka head coach Jayasekara Channa commented.
