Tehran, Iran, August 22, 2022 –Thailand produced a magnificent come-from-behind 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-8, 25-17) win against Kuwait to finish 7th place in the 14th Asian Men’s U18 Volleyball Championship at the Federation Hall on Monday.
Thailand started solidly in the opening set in the 7th-8th playoff encounter, but Kuwait held firm to produce the goods and won the close affair 25-23. Conceding one set, the Thais responded with effective blocks and powerful attacks in the second set with an aim of making amends for the loss in the first set. Unleashing powerful attacks to surge ahead the rivals, Thailand proved steadier to win the set 25-18.
Their confidence boosted after holding 1-1, Thailand took command in the third set. Attempting to hit back, the Kuwaitis found the rivals too strong and the on-going battle turned a totally one-way traffic. The Thais stole the show to capture the effortless set 25-8.
Leading 2-1, Thailand showed consistency in the fourth set and stormed on their aggression to win the set 25-17, match and the 7th place.
Christopher Upakam weighed in with 20 attack points for Thailand, while team-mate Chaloemdet Bunrot contributed 15 points. Bader Alattar led Kuwait with 13 points.
En route to the 7th-place finish in this top-tier competition, Thailand saved the best for last as they lost five matches in a row to Korea, India, Japan, Chinese Taipei and hosts Iran respectively before beating Kuwait in their last match of this top-tier tournament to return with the 7th position while Kuwait finished on the bottom eighth.
In their 11th appearance in the Asian Men’s U18 Championship, Thailand ended in below-par 7th position. At the previous edition four years ago, Thailand returned with a well-earned fifth place.
