THAILAND GO DOWN IN STRAIGHT SETS TO ITALY AT 2019 VNL

Opole, Poland, May 22, 2019 – Italy scored their second VNL win in Pool 1. Unlike in Tuesday’s five-setter against Poland, coach Mazzanti’s players saw Thailand off without dropping a set (25-13 25-17 26-24) on Wednesday.

Italy player Lucia Bosetti: “We are very happy because these three points are very important for us. We continue to work on our team and try to improve every day. After yesterday’s five-setter we wanted to finish the game a little bit faster today, so we tried to push more in the end. The VNL is a difficult format, because we play every day so it’s better to save energy.”

Italy coach Davide Mazzanti: “In the first and second set we played very good volleyball and in the third we gave away too many points. I think it’s a normal thing at this stage of competition, so I’m happy about our performance and another victory. I think we can still improve our game and we need matches to do it. Both today and yesterday in the game against Poland my girls played very well in the tougher moments and in the decisive part of the match, which I’m really happy about.”

Thailand captain Nootsara Tomkom: “We knew that it will be a difficult game for us. Italy is a strong team and they showed it today. They put pressure on us with service and it caused problems in our reception. In addition, our opponents played very fast today and it was hard for us to block them. Against Poland we have to play our volleyball and do our best. We met each other in Montreux so we know their style of play. I hope that this experience will be helpful for us.”

Thailand coach Danai Sriwacharamaytakul: “It’s good for Thailand team to play against a strong opponent like Italy. The Italians play really well on every position, so it is never easy to fight with them. We are happy that we can gain experience playing in a tournament like this one. I am sure that every piece of knowledge we get here, will make us better in the future. Today Italy play well in attack and that was the key to their win. Tomorrow we will play against Poland, we know them from Montreux Volley Masters, and we know what can be expected from this game.”
