THAILAND TRIUMPH IN THREE SETS AGAINST CHINESE TAIPEI

Pasig City, Philippines, August 24, 2022 –Thailand completed Pool B of the preliminary round of the 2022 AVC Cup for Women with a 2-1 card, after taking straight sets 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-16) against Chinese Taipei on Wednesday at the PhilSports Arena.

Crowd favorites Chatchu-on Moksri (16 points) and Pimpichaya Kokram (11 points) proved their stellar power on the court as the top scorers in Thailand’s second victory in the competition.

Thailand tried to dictate the tempo of the match with their powerful and strategic serves. These looked to throw off their opponents’ passing unit, who have previously demonstrated that they could cover the floor well. The Thai servers were performing well, which afforded them time, space, and momentum to set up the counter-attack.

Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei could not seem to completely establish their own rhythm. They have been historically known to cover the floor and pass well, but they could not seem to fully adjust to their opponents’ serves. They tried to shuffle around their personnel in search of the best squad on the floor. Kan Ko-Hui, Wu Fang-Yu and captain Chang Li-Wen took turns in scoring but could not find enough momentum to surge forward.

Thailand captain and setter Pornpun Guedpard led the team in orchestrating sound offense. She distributed the ball across almost all hitters, and skilfully placed her sets to nullify any attempt for the opponents’ blockers to line up.

Pornpun was pleased with Wednesday’s victory, but she feels her team would still need to improve.

“I feel that our team may not be playing at the highest level possible. We just came from the FIVB Volleyball Nations League where we had to play at the top level, but now, honestly, we still have some mistakes. Anyway, we have to get better and really master our system,” she said.

Both teams head toward rest and recovery days to await their respective match-ups in the quarterfinals set on Saturday, August 27 at Pasig City’s PhilSports Arena.
