THAILAND U23 JOIN SICHUAN, VTV BINH DIEN AND BIP IN SEMI-FINALS OF 13TH VTV9-BINH DIEN CUP

Kien Giang, Vietnam, May 16, 2019 – Unbeaten Sichuan will test their mettle against Thailand U23 and hosts VTV Binh Dien Long An set up a revenge clash against old foe Bring It Promotions (BIP) in the Saturday’s semi-finals of the “13th VTV9-Binh Dien Cup” International Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the Kien Giang Gymnasium.

On Thursday, Sichuan outclassed Hoa Chat Duc Giang in comfortable straight sets 25-16 25-20 25-13 to end their campaign in the pool round-robin preliminaries with remarkable unbeaten record, claiming 9 points from three straight wins to top Pool B and secure their semi-final berth.

Zhang Honglin scored a team-high 14 points for Sichuan, while Tan Xinyi and Zhang Xiaoya made good company to bag 13 and 12 points respectively. Tran Thuy led Hoa Chat Duc Giang with 11 points.

USA’s BIP also made it to the semi-finals after a terrific comeback 3-1 (9-25 25-17 25-18 25-13) win against Thong tin Lienvietpostbank on Thursday. BIP had 6 points from two wins against one loss to finish second in Pool B. Thong tin Lienvietpostbank came in third place with 4 points from one win against two losses, with Hoa Chat Duc Giang in fourth position with no point from three losses in a row.

Lindsay Stalzer chipped in with 21 points for BIP, while Bui Thi Nga led Thong tin Lietvietpostbank with 14 points.

The pool round-robin preliminaries in Pool A came to conclusion earlier on Wednesday, with VTV Binh Dien Long An claiming the top spot with 8 points from three straight wins. Thailand U23 finished second with 6 points from two wins against one loss. Vietin Bank and winless Nanjing University of China came in third and fourth places with 4 points and no point respectively.

In the Saturday’s semi-finals, Sichuan, the only team which have yet lost a set to their respective rivals, will take on the Thailand 23 squad, which have been gaining experience and exposure in their preparation for the third Asian Women’s U23 Volleyball Championship in Hanoi, Vietnam from July 13 to 21, while hosts VTV Binh Dien Long An will challenge BIP from the USA, the team they had lost 2-3 in the semi-finals of the previous edition last year.

Vietin Bank, Nanjing University, third and fourth places in Pool A, and Thong tin Lienvietpostbank, Hoa Chat Duc Giang, third and fourth places in Pool B, were relegated to the 5th-8th classification round.

Friday, May 17 will be the rest day. The semi-finals and the 5th-8th classification round resumes the following day. The 5th-8th classification round on Saturday sees Vietin Bank take on Hoa Chat Duc Giang at 12.10pm local time, with Thong tin Lienvietpostbank playing Nanjing University at 2pm

In the semi-finals, VTV Binh Dien Long An go up against BIP at 4pm, while Sichuan take on Thailand U23 at 7pm.
