The previous edition of the FIVB World Congress was held in Cancun, Mexico in November 2018
Lausanne, Switzerland, April 17, 2020 – The FIVB Board of Administration has approved the rescheduling of its 37th World Congress to January 27-29, 2021 in Phuket, Thailand due to the global coronavirus pandemic.
The 37th FIVB World Congress was originally scheduled for 15-17 October 2020 in Phuket, Thailand. The FIVB’s decision to reschedule the meeting to 2021 reflects the Federation’s top priority of protecting the health and safety of the entire Volleyball Family. In addition, as stipulated by the FIVB Constitution, Confederation Congresses must be held between three and four months prior to the FIVB World Congress, and its postponement will ensure that the Confederations can host their Congresses at a later stage between 27 September and 27 October 2020.
Additionally, the FIVB Board of Administration and Executive Committee meetings, originally scheduled for 26-28 May 2020, will also be postponed to later in the summer of 2020 to potentially allow for the in-person participation of members. The specific dates of these meetings will be confirmed at a later date.
The FIVB World Congress is the Federation’s supreme governing body, bringing together delegates from over 200 National Federations every two years. The Congress is a key fixture on the global volleyball calendar and is where the future direction of the sport is agreed, new goals are ratified, and the community aligns around one single goal – growing volleyball around the world.
The 37th World Congress will see the election of all FIVB Board of Administration members for the term 2020-2024 It will be the first FIVB World Congress in which an integrity check of all candidates for positions on the FIVB Board of Administration will be conducted. Meanwhile, the FIVB Presidential elections will be held in 2024 as the term of the current President Ary S. Graça F° runs until then.
The previous edition of the FIVB World Congress, held in Cancun, Mexico on 15-16 November 2018, approved several important changes, including the incorporation of the integrity check. The new design of the Mikasa volleyball, set to be used also at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, was also revealed at that event.
