Tehran, Iran, December 30, 2020 – Urmia Shahrdari struggled hard to beat Tehran Saipa in hard-fought five-set thriller to move atop the standings of the Iran Men’s Premier Volleyball League, iranvolleyball.com reported on Wednesday.

Six matches had been held in Week 16 at the Volleyball Federation Hall and Volleyball House of Tehran Hall, which saw Yazd Shahdab, Urmia Shahrdari, Ardakan Khatam, Tehran Paykan, Amol Haraz Labaniat, and Gonbad Shahrdari claim wins.

Both Urmia Shahrdari and Tehran Saipa came up all-out to win this tough match. However, the former proved their class, surviving the latter’s scare to cruise to a hard-fought five-set win 25-22, 20-25, 27-25, 14-25, 17-15. Following the victory, Urmia Shahrdari moved to the top of the standings.

Week 16 is the new phase of the away round in the preliminaries where Sirjan Foulad dominated the first half-season to emerge as the champions, but in their first away match, they went down to Yazd Shahdab 1-3 (21-25 25-15 17-25 23-25) to drop to second place.

Sepahan Foulad and Qazvin Shahrdari rested in the first week of away round, while Urmia Shahrdari, Sirjan Foulad and Sepahan Foulad finished respective top three at the end of Week 16.

Meanwhile, the officials of League Organization decided to use video-check in the second mid-season to assist the referees as the matches started to become more competitive and controversial.

The away preliminary matches in the second week (Week 17) continue on Friday, January 1, 2021 at Volleyball Federation Hall and Volleyball House of Tehran Hall.
