UZBEKISTAN STRUGGLE TO BEAT AUSSIES FOR TASTE OF FIRST VICTOY AT 14TH ASIAN WOMEN’S U18 CHAMPIONSHIP

Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, June 9, 2022 – Young Uzbekistan put it past the spirited Aussies in four-setter 25-13, 25-15, 17-25, 26-24 to register their first victory at the 14th Asian Women’s U18 Volleyball Championship at Nakhon Pathom Sports Center Gymnasium on Thursday.

Powerful attackers Dilnoza Boymirzaeva and Komila Gusamova got Uzbekistan off to a brilliant start to take the first set 25-13. Confidence boosted by the first-set win, the Uzbek girls continued their onslaughts in the second set, firing back-to-back attacks to leave Australia far behind 22-12. Uzbekistan still fared better at the final assault to win the comfortable second set 25-15.

Conceding two sets in a row, the Aussies gave it all out in the third set and their great determination bore fruits when they levelled at 10-10 before stretching it with four-point clear at 20-16. The Uzbeks tried hard to catch up with the brave oppositions, but the Aussies held their nerves to take the set 25-17 to claim their very first set in this top-flight competition.

In the fourth set, both sides fought hard from the very beginning, with Dilnoza showcasing her exceptional attacking to help Uzbekistan move ahead. Despite a sturdy challenge from the rivals, the Uzbeks surged away with it through combination attacks and excellent teamwork for the hard-fought 26-24 win.

Dilnoza Boymirzaeva chipped in with 15 points including 13 kills for Uzbekistan, while Kayla Cantrill topscored with 12 points for Australia.

Succumbing to four consecutive losses, Australia had already completed their pool preliminaries in fifth position in Pool A and are set to take on the Pool B’s 6th place on Sunday. The team losing that match will return home in 11th place in the championship, while the winning team will next move on to battle it out with the team finishing 5th in Pool B in the classification round for 9th-10th places.

Uzbekistan will play their last preliminary match on Saturday.
