VIETNAM COMPLETE PRELIMINARY ROUND WITH 3-0 DEFEAT OF KOREA

Pasig City, Philippines, August 24, 2022 – Vietnam finished with 3 wins in Pool A of the preliminary round of the 2022 AVC Cup for Women after Wednesday’s 3-0 defeat (25-13, 25-13, 25-16) of Korea at the Philsports Arena.

Vietnam’s outside hitter Nguyen Thi Uyen (13 points) and middle blocker Ly Thi Luyen (10 points) figured in double-digits as the best scorers of the match.

Vietnam showed consistent play throughout the match, setting up their offense carefully, running the wing attacks Nguyen Thu Uyen and Vi Thi Nu Quynh.

Vietnam’s frontline likewise had the edge in defense, lining up their tall players and timing their blocks well enough to complete their deflections. Moreover, they had the luxury to run combination plays, and eventually convert those into points.

For the Korean side, it was a good opportunity to get their young players respond to the different contexts of the rallies. They were able to set up opposite Choi Hosun and outside hitter Kim Seyul at the wings. The substitute players also had their chance to score in pretty good plays.

Mostly, the young Korean team had to deal with unforced errors. They were unable to handle the finer details of key moments in transition. They were able to perform better in the third set, keeping close range of their more experienced opponents.

However, Vietnam gained momentum, running the pipe and middle attack, to help close out the match in straight sets.

Korea captain Hwang Jimin expressed much admiration for their opponents on Wednesday and commented on her team’s performance in AVC Cup for Women.

“As first it felt like such a challenge, but as the competition goes by, I feel that everyone in our team in really cooperating and helping one another. So far, it has been a great experience for us,” she said.

Vietnam head to the rest and recovery period and await the quarterfinal match-ups. Korea will face hosts Philippines in the main match on Thursday, August 25, at 19:00 local time.
