With their first Volleyball Nations League (VNL) game just over 20 days away, the Australian Men’s Volleyroos have come together for a two week training block at the Australian Institute of Sport.
The first opportunity to come together as a squad in 2022, the camp is an important stepping stone to the Volleyball Nations League which kicks off in June in Brazil, before heading to Bulgaria and Japan.
The camp also offers the squad an opportunity to bring together a mixture of senior athletes, new athletes to the squad and Australian Volleyball Academy athletes who are getting a valuable training opportunity to mix it with the best Australian volleyballers.
Under the guidance of new Head Coach Dave Preston, the squad will be working hard with their sights firmly set on the VNL title.
Having commenced in the role only a few weeks ago, Preston said the camp is a great opportunity to bring together his new side.
“It is great to see the Volleyroos back on the court together, and a great chance for me to be with the squad for the first time,” Preston said.
“We’re all looking forward to the challenges ahead and I’m excited to see what this group can accomplish moving forward,” he said.
Volleyroo Arash Dosanjh has been based in Italy since the last VNL campaign wrapped up in 2021, but said he is loving being back in the national team environment.
“It’s always exciting to come back from the club season and join the national team to prepare for the international season,” Dosanjh said.
“We’ve got a new coach and a lot of new guys joining the team this season so it’s an exciting time for the national team.
“We’ll have a pretty busy camp getting used to playing with each other and learning the new systems Dave will implement, but everyone’s ready to hit the ground running and excited to see what we can do in this campaign,” he said.
National Performance Director Craig Marshall will also spend some time in camp with the squad, and is looking forward to working closely with Dave on the road to VNL, Asia Cup, and beyond to Brisbane 2032.
“It’s an exciting time in men’s indoor volleyball in Australia at the moment, with the recruitment of new head coach Dave Preston,” Marshall said.
“We’re all looking forward to seeing the positive impact that he will have on this group, not only with the upcoming Volleyball Nations League and Asia Cup campaign but also with his long-term goals, which will help shape our 2032 Olympic aspirations,” he said.
