China prepare for title defence with seven Rio veterans and five Olympic debutantes

The China Volleyball Association announced its 12-player roster for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Japan this week.

Outside hitter Zhu Ting leads as captain as China head into the defence of their Olympic title with a mix of relatively experienced players and Olympic newcomers.

At the 2021 FIVB Volleyball Nations League in Rimini, Italy, head coach Lang Ping appointed Zhang Changning as the interim captain, and the outside hitter recorded two over-30 point performances before the other key players joined the action in Week 4.

China concluded their 2021 FIVB Volleyball Nations League campaign in fifth place, with 10 wins in 15 matches. The Asian powerhouse punched in six consecutive wins in the last two weeks of the preliminaries, including a big straight-sets win over eventual winners the United States.

The last couple of matches provided a preview of just how strong a contender the Chinese team will be in Tokyo. With seven Rio 2016 veterans returning for another Olympic run, and reinforced by five young and talented players, they certainly have a formidable team.
