10 TEAMS STRUTTING THEIR STUFF IN HISTORIC WEST ASIAN WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP IN JORDAN

Hosts Jordan celebrate their first win against Oman

Bangkok, Thailand, November 14, 2022 – The 1st West Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship is being held in Jordan’s capital city Amman between November 13 and 24, with 10 teams vying for top honour in the inaugural competition.

Iraq enjoy their first win against Saudi Arabia

Pool A comprised Palestine, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Syria, while the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and hosts Jordan are in Pool B.

Participating teams will play the pool round-robin preliminaries and after completion of the first round, only top four teams in each pool will advance to the cross quarterfinals, with Pool A winners (1A) taking on the Pool B fourth place (4B) and the team finishing second in Pool A (2A) challenging the Pool B third place (3B).

Also, Pool B winners (1B) will play Pool A fourth place (4A), while the team finishing second in Pool B (2B) will be pitted against the team finishing third position in Pool A (3A).

The four winning teams will then qualify for the semifinals, with the 1A-4B winners fighting it out with the winning team in the 2B-3A encounter. The other semifinal clash sees the 1B-4A winners go up against the winning team in the 2A-3B clash.

Jordan

Iraq, Lebanon, the UAE and hosts Jordan similarly enjoyed their comfortable straight-set wins on the opening-day encounters on November 13. Iraq powered past Saudi Arabia in straight sets 25-9, 25-14, 25-10, while the Lebanese side, which earlier sharpened their skill in three tune-up matches against Jordan in their preparation for the inaugural championship, proved too strong for Palestine to brush off the unfancied opponents 25-12, 25-16, 25-12.

The UAE also stole the show following their impressive 25-10, 25-18, 25-8, with the host team sealing a confident 25-15, 25-10, 25-14 triumph against Oman.
