Thailand ended their five-game drought in the FIVB Women’s U20 World Championship in Rotterdam, the Netherlands after 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-16) demolition of winless Rwanda in their last preliminary Pool G match on Thursday.
Waranya Srilaoong chipped in with 16 points for Thailand and Wiranyupa Inchan added 15, while Aloysie Tuyishime led Rwanda with 8 points.
Suphatcha Khamtrareaksa, captain and setter of Thailand, said at the Mixed Zone: “Of course, we are happy with the win. It is our first victory here at the tournament. Still, we have made too many errors, and we need to improve in the future.”
Diane Mpuhwezimana, setter of Rwanda, said: “We still have many problems in reception and defence. We need to work on these elements. We will try to give our best in the next matches.”
Contesting the 9th-16th classification round, Thailand finished third in Pool G with 3 points from one win against 2 losses to Turkey and Argentina and underdogs Rwanda came in fourth place.
In their preliminary Pool C earlier, the Thai squad went down in straight sets to Turkey, the USA and Russia, which saw Thailand and Turkey relegated to 9th-16th classification round in Pool G.
Meanwhile, Turkey, current world No.2, and Argentina, top two teams in Pool G, will next join Pool H winners Belarus and second place Egypt in the 9th-12th playoffs, while Thailand and Rwanda will take on Belgium and Puerto Rico, third and fourth places in Pool H in the 13th-16th playoffs. The 9th-16th playoff encounters will be held in Kortrijk, Belgium.
