BOBNER/BETSCHART, CHURIN/VICTORIA ENTER ROUND OF 16 WITH TIE-BREAK WINS

Udon Thani, Thailand, June 21, 2019 – Switzerland’s Esmee Bobner and Mara Betschart and Argentina’s Brenda Ailen Churin and Victoria Pozzo Galdon emerged victorious in their tiebreaker matches to win their respective pools and advance to the round of 16 of the FIVB Beach Volleyball U21 World Championships.

Before stepping inside the courts of Thung Si Mueang on Friday, Bobner/Betschart and Churin/Victoria must face opponents that have equal number of victories to be able to move to the winners’ bracket.

Bobner and Betschart succeeded in their mission with a 2-1 (17-21, 22-20, 15-11) win against Canada’s Lea Monkhouse and Jasmin Safar in Pool G.

“Canada had match point but we somehow managed to get through that second set. We started slowly but we got confident after that set victory,” Bobner said. “Now it feels great to win the game, thinking that we almost lost it.”

“After we won that second set it was just clear that we had to give everything to win the final set,” Betschart said. “We had to push ourselves beyond our limits and we did just that. Lessening our mistakes and doing well on the first two contacts were key to our win.”

Churin and Victoria, on the other hand, bounced back from their setback in the second set with a two-point margin in the final frame to win 2-1 (22-20, 10-21, 15-13) against the United States’ Isabelle Bauman and Teagan Defalco in Pool D.

Italy’s Chiara They and Orsi Toth endured a tough three-set match (19-21, 22-20, 15-9) to finish on top of Pool E with three wins against Spain’s Maria Belen Carro and Daniela Alvarez.

Meanwhile, joining the three pool winners in the round of 16 are pairs from Mexico, Brazil, Russia, Peru and Thailand.

Mexican pair Silvia Emily Herdrick and Estefania Elizabeth Ibarra topped Pool A with a 2-0 (21-17, 21-12) win over Thailand’s Pawarun Chanthawichai and Saranya Laesood, while Brazilian duo Victoria Lopes Pereira and Vitoria De Souza ruled Pool B with a match sweep against Poland’s Aleksandra Stadnik and Zuzanna Herrmann (21-14, 21-10).

Youth Olympic Games gold medallists Bocharova and Voronina conquered the top spot in Pool C with a 2-0 (21-11, 21-13) win over Egypt, while Peru’s Lisbeth Allcca and Medalyn Mendoza topped Pool F with a 2-0 (21-11, 21-12) victory against New Zealand.

Thai duo Yodsaphat Pakham and Chanthira Khanok showed top form to finish with three straight-set wins in Pool H, including their latest conquest against China’s Cao Shuting and Dong Jie 2-0 (21-16, 21-11).

Germany’s Hannah Ziemer/Hanna-Marie Schieder and Svenja Muller/Sarah Schulz, Russia’s Anastasiia Frolova/Aleksandra Ganenko, Czech Republic’s Karin Zolnercikova/Martina Maixnerova and Australia’s Rebecca Ingram/Alisha Stevens came up with victories in pool play and the round of 24 to advance to the next round.

Completing the round of 16 draw are Canada’s Monkhouse/Safar, Spain’s Carro/Alvarez and USA’s Bauman/Defalco who rebounded with a win in the round of 24.
