Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, June 20, 2023 – Chinese Taipei went for a strong finish in Preliminary Round of the 2023 AVC Challenge Cup for Women by sweeping Iran 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-13).
The Tuesday afternoon’s opener at the Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gresik Gymnasium now brings Chinese Taipei to the top of Pool B after their second victory without dropping a set so far in the competition.
Hitters Chang Li-Wen and Lin Shu-Ho provided consistent performances, suiting up nearly all match long. They delivered double-digit markers, with 16 points and 13 points respectively.
Captain Chen Tzu-Ya said “We prepared well for this match and imposed pressure on block and serve.”
Chinese Taipei went ahead to dictate the tempo of the match, showing much adherence to their known system characterized by fast pacing and mastery of various offense options. This gave them the clear edge in transition plays, as they could set up the effective attacks of Chang Li-Wen from the flanks, and Wu Fang-Yu from the backrow.
Iran were not without any credit, as they gallantly tried to play along the tempo of their opponents. Their backrow delivered in key transitions, enabling them to connect in a number of plays.
Throughout the match, Chinese Taipei built their momentum, founded upon much confidence in their technique, their tactics, and their clearly evident cohesion as one unit. They moved in the frontline with such fluid motion. They lined up their blocks rather quite effectively, as they have prepared well against a taller line-up.
“It will be interesting and exciting for our team to play against Indonesia, and our coach is preparing well for this in our attack, block, serve, defense, in every area. We want to be able to show that we have a team of 14 good players so our coach is really letting everyone play to perform their best.” Chen Tzu-Ya added.
Chinese Taipei and Iran now await their respective match-ups from Pool D for the Classification matches scheduled on Wednesday in Gresik City.
