FIVB MOURNS PASSING OF AUSTRALIAN VOLLEYBALL VISIONARY WALTER LEBEDEW

Lebedew was rightfully considered the father of the Australian Volleyball Federation

The FIVB is deeply saddened by the loss of Walter Lebedew, who dedicated his life to the growth and development of volleyball in Australia and was rightfully considered the father of the Australian Volleyball Federation. His contributions will forever be remembered and celebrated.

Surviving the hardships of World War II, Walter Lebedew immigrated to Australia with his family, where he chose to pursue a newfound ambition in administration of volleyball and soccer. He taught himself to play and referee volleyball and went on to organise the first Australian Volleyball Championships in 1963. Despite the lack of indoor facilities, difficulty obtaining balls, and limitations on promotion, Walter persevered and worked tirelessly to expand the sport.

Thanks to his efforts, the national women’s competition commenced in 1964, and he later organised the first-ever Asian championships in Melbourne. For six years, Walter wrote and produced the Australian Volleyball Journal. Both of his sons had successful careers in volleyball and eventually became coaches at Olympic Games and FIVB World Championships.

Walter Lebedew was the founder of Volleyball South Australia and was awarded the first-ever VSA life membership. In 1985, he received the prestigious title of Order of Australia (OAM) for services to volleyball.

The FIVB and the global volleyball family extend their deepest condolences to the Australian volleyball community and Walter Lebedew’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
