Bangkok, Thailand, July 25, 2021 – Mayu Ishikawa and Ai Kurogo scored 13 points apiece to help Asian champions Japan put it past Kenya in convincing straight sets in their Pool A clash of the Tokyo 2020 volleyball tournament at Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday.
In their first encounter in the Tokyo 2020, world No. 5 Japan, which finished fourth place at this year’s Volleyball Nations League in Rimini, Italy, faced no issues in brushing off world No.24 Kenya 25-15, 25-11, 25-23.
After going down with ease in the first two sets, Kenya came up with better performance in the third set, showing tremendous courage and defensive resilience. However, the Japanese remained strong defensively to capture the hard-fought set and match.
Mayu Ishikawa chipped in with 13 points including 11 attacks and 1 ace. Teammate Ai Kurogo assisted with 13 points including 12 attacks, while Haruyo Shimamura led the Japan’s blocking with 4 points. Chepchumba Kiprono Sharon scored 18 points including 16 attacks in Kenya’s losing efforts.
On Tuesday, Japan will go up against reigning world champions Serbia, which powered past Dominican Republic in straight sets 25-18, 25-12, 25-20.
