Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, June 9, 2022 – Unbeaten defending champions Japan demolished Kazakhstan in convincing straight sets 25-9, 25-17, 25-22 to stay atop Pool B with unchallenged 12 points to safely secure semifinals berth in the 14th Asian Women’s U18 Volleyball Championship at Nakhon Pathom Sports Center Gymnasium on Thursday.
Japan entered the court confidently on Thursday following their successive straight-set victory in the last three matches against China, India and Chinese Taipei.
After the scintillating win against Kazakhstan for four consecutive victories in the topnotch championship, Japan are now assured of advancing to the semifinals aside from claiming the first ticket for the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U19 World Championship although they still have one match remaining against Philippines in their last Pool B preliminary clash on Saturday
Kazakhstan, collecting 6 points from two wins against two losses, are due to take on China on Saturday in their last pool play match in a glimmer of hope that they will improve their luck in that tough match.
Against Kazakhstan in the first two sets, Japan showed tremendous courage and defensive resilience to win some crucial points in the comfortable-looking match. They managed to prove a cut above the opponents to win 25-9, 25-17.
Both teams made a confident start in the third set, but the Kazakhs took better steps by capitalizing on the service faults of the Japanese to leave them behind 16-12. As Japan grew in confidence and went on their aggression, Kazakhstan failed to make their mark and lost the closely-contested set 25-22 and match.
Sae Omori scored a match-high 19 points for Japan, while Sofiya Gorbachev led Kazakhstan with 7 points.
