Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, June 19, 2023 – Day 2 of the 2023 AVC Challenge Cup for Women Preliminary Round unfolded with Philippines and Iran winning their first match in the competition, with Vietnam picking up their second victory on Monday at the Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gresik Gymnasium.
In the day’s opener in Pool A, Philippines defeated Macau, China with a sweep, 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-9). Head coach Jorge Souza De Brito fielded in most of his players in the match, but mostly relied on Captain Aiza Pontillas and outside hitter Faith Nisperos who led the victory with 11 points and 10 points respectively.
In a later match in Pool B, Iran and Hong Kong, China battled out a five-set thriller, with the Iran side emerging as winners, 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 25-17, 19-25, 15-8). Opposite hitter Ashofteh Mona reported for all five sets of the match and registered a stellar output of 27 points from 23 attacks, 3 blocks and a service winner.
Vietnam secured the top spot in Pool D with Monday evening’s sweep of Uzbekistan, 3-0 (25-11, 25-6, 25-18). The Vietnamese side dominated in all fronts, converting with 43 attacks. 7 blocks and 9 service aces.
Pool play in the Preliminary Round concludes on Tuesday, June 20, followed by the cross-over Classification matches on Wednesday, June 21.
After the teams head to a rest and recovery day, the Quarter-finals, Semi-finals matches are scheduled all the way to culminate with the finale on Sunday, June 25.
The winning team in the AVC Challenge Cup will qualify for the FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup (scheduled July 27-30, 2023) which is the promotion platform for the 2024 edition of Volleyball Nations League.
As the AVC Challenge Cup will now be held annually beginning in 2023, all participating teams will chart the corresponding ranking points as the competition progresses.
