Songkhla, Thailand, April 13, 2023 – The Thailand Volleyball Association on Thursday held a ceremony called “Rod-Nam-Dam-Hua” at the BP Samila Beach Hotel here during Songkran, a traditional Thai festival celebrating the Thai New Year, which falls on April 13-15 each year, ahead of the water fight among beach volleyball players taking part in the “Est Cola” AVC Beach Tour 22nd Samila Open.
TVA President Mr Somporn Chaibangyang presided over the so-called water-pouring ceremony, regarded as the important tradition to ask forgiveness and blessings from the revered elders.
Newly-appointed TVA Secretary General Mr Nattapong Kesapan led TVA officials, Thai beach volleyball players, media representatives and working staffs, all dressed in colourful Thai costumes, in pouring scented water on the hands of the three respected elders – Mr Somporn, TVA Honorary President Mr Kriangkrai Noppasong, and Referee Delegate Mr Jayaraman Srinivasan from India.
Later, Mr Kriangkrai gave a speech, wishing everyone a happy and prosperous life and a success in the traditional Samila Open, which will be held between April 14 and 17 at the adjacent Samila Beach in this popular tourist town of Songkhla.
After that, cheerful beach spikers from hosts Thailand and participating Asian nations comprising China, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Hong Kong China, Malaysia, Singapore, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and Vanuatu joined the fun water fight at the hotel.
Laughing happily, they splashed water on each other, some firing at others with water guns and some covering the others’ faces in flour. It was a moment of happiness for all participants ahead of their competitive competition the following day.
To avoid themselves from the energy-sapping dehydration on one of the hot days on Thursday, not too many foreign players joined the Songkran parade at downtown Songkhla. Still, they had a lot of laughs and smiles while joining the water battle with friendly Songkhla residents.
