Manama, Bahrain, May 18, 2023 – Mighty Police Sports Team of Qatar stormed into the semi-finals of the 2023 Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship following brilliant 25-21, 25-17, 25-23 victory over South Gas Sports Club of Iraq in their quarterfinals clash in Pool F at Issa Bin Rashid Hall 1 on Thursday.
Against Police Sports Team, Iraq’s South Gas Sports Club mounted a strong challenge, but their determined efforts were in vain, as the Qataris came all-out with the single goal in mind – to beat the rivals and ensure that the semifinal berth could be within their reach.
As expected, the Iraqi side could not cope with the formidable rivals’ amazing power-and-speed tactics and went down in the first set to the well-established Qatari counterparts 25-21.
South Gas Sports Club upped their tempo in an effort of making amends for the first-set loss, but they still failed to make their mark in the second set, leaving Police Sports Team to seize the opportunity to attack effectively and block solidly for the crucial 25-17 win.
With Nikola Vasic continuing to notch crucial points through spectacular attacks, Police Sports Team remained exceptional in the third set and captured the close set 25-23 and match.
Oliver Venno from Estonia chipped in with 20 points including 18 attacks for Police Sports Team, while Todor Skirmov led South Gas Sports Club with 16 points including 12 attacks and team-leading 3 aces.
Police Sports Team had already beaten Kuwait Sporting Club in their pool play earlier and therefore, the straight-set win against South Gas on Thursday has guaranteed the Qataris the semifinals the following day when they will go up against Iran’s Shadab Yazd in a match to determine a one-two finish in Pool F.
