REFEREES APPOINTED FOR ASIAN SENIOR MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP IN URMIA READY TO OFFICIATE IN POOL MATCHES

Urmia, Iran, August 18, 2023 – The 22nd Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship gets underway in Urmia, Iran from August 19 to 26, with a strong field of 18 teams vying for top honour and accumulated points for FIVB World Rankings.

A total of 17 accompanying referees have been nominated by AVC to officiate at the topflight championship under the guidance of Referee Delegate Mr Santiago Beny Coonghe from India and Referee Sub-Committee Members Mohammad Shahmiri from Iran,  Amur Humaid Abdullah Al Tuqi from Oman, and Mr Ibrahim Mohd Al-Naama from Qatar.

To help war-stricken Afghanistan and upon the request of Afghanistan NOC, Iran has assisted them to have an accompany referee from Iran while the referee of India is absent and as a result, only 16 referees will take charge in this championship.

Having completed the theoretical phase of the Referee Clinic in the morning, the referees attended the practical phase inside the court right after.

During the Referee Clinic, all referees also stood chances to work closely with the Video Challenge. All the participating teams will take the benefit of the new-technology Video Challenge System to assist the referees in the decision making process in order to make the game absolutely fair to the athletes’ actions.

According to the Video Challenge team, Challenges are allowed for one of the following situations:

a) Ball in/out – for side and end lines

b) Block Touch – contact with the ball by the player (i.e. the blocker)

c) Net Fault – contact with the net between the antennae by the player in the action of playing the ball

d) Antenna Touch – contact with the antenna by the player or by the ball

e) Foot Fault – a) contact of the server with the playing court (end line included) or the lateral free zone outside the service zone, b) faulty contact of a player with the 3-meter attack line, c) the complete crossing of the center line by the player’s foot or feet.

“We have emphassised on the discipline of the referees to leave less place for the mistake”, Referee Delegate Mr S. Beny Coonghe said.
