SAUDI ARABIA MAINTAIN UNBEATEN STREAK AT 1ST WEST ASIA MEN’S U20 CHAMPIONSHIP

Bangkok, Thailand, July 25, 2022 – Hosts Saudi Arabia ousted Palestine in impressive four-setter to remain unscathed at the 1st West Asia Men’s U20 Volleyball Championship at Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz Sports Hall in Dammam, Saudi Arabia on Sunday.

With a well-fought 3-1 (25-15, 25-12, 23-25, 25-22) win, Saudi Arabia made it three in succession to stay atop Pool B with a maximum 9 points.

The other match in the same pool saw Kuwait taste their first victory in the tournament after an epic tie-break win against Syria, narrowly edging out the tough opponents with fantastic comeback.

Kuwait lost the closely-contested first set 25-27, hit back aggressively to take the next two sets 25-15 and 31-29, went down in the fourth set 18-25 and captured the decider 15-13.

In Pool A encounters, Lebanon pulled off a dominant straight-set 25-16, 25-18, 25-18 win against the UAE counterparts for their first triumph in the topflight 10-day tournament.

The other clash saw Iraq face no issue in shutting out Jordan in comfortable straight sets 25-20, 25-20, 25-14.

Kuwait also claimed their first win on Sunday following their hard-fought five-set thriller against Syria. The Kuwaiti side lost the closely-contested first set 25-27, hit back aggressively to take the next two sets 25-15 and 31-29, went down in the fourth set 18-25 and won the home stretch 15-13 in the decider.

After three days, Iraq and Bahrain had 6 points apiece in Pool A, but Bahrain had a rest day on Sunday to win two matches in a row. Iraq contested three matches, but lost one to the Bahrainis. The UAE and Lebanon had 3 points each, with the former playing three matches including one win against Jordan and the latter enjoying mixed fortunes to record one win and one loss. Jordan lost two matches they had played.

Saudi Arabia led Pool B with a clean sweep of three wins. Syria came in second place with 3 points from one win against two losses. Palestine and Kuwait had the similar performance with one win against one loss to collect only 2 points. Qatar also had 2 points from two matches which similarly ended in the team’s 2-3 loss.
