USA kicked off their world title defence campaign in the 2021 Girls’ U18 FIVB World Championship with a straight set victory 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-23) over Thailand in Durango, Mexico on Tuesday.
Wucherer McKenna scored a game-high 16 points for the USA, while Mendelson Margaret added 13. Ampha Sonsurat and Donphon Sinpho handed Thailand 13 points apiece on the team’s losing effort.
Jamie Morrison, Head Coach of United States: “Thailand play with a different spirit than any other team in the world, I’ve always enjoyed playing against them at any level and it was a great opportunity for the girls to see that. This was a really good starting point for us, it’s the beginning of a longer journey and there are definitely things to work on, I am sure we will continue to improve. The girls really showed up in that close ending; in the last couple of points the team really nailed the pass, we gained again ball control, we ran our offense with some tempo, we got a good swing with a kill and then we served tough”.
Rebekah Allick, Captain of United States: “We were a bit greedier than we expected to be, maybe because we had the sense that our size was going to make a difference, but the ball wasn’t hitting the floor that easy; so I think our patience was really good in getting used to their velocity and their attacking at different angles”.
Kritideach Arjwichai, Head Coach of Thailand: “Our girls are excited and a first performance is always difficult. About our performance, our serves and receptions weren’t good; it’s not that easy to face United States, one of the best teams here in the tournament. We need to be patient and go on improving with each performance”.
Donphon Sinpho, Captain of Thailand: “I am so excited because this is my first international match. It’s not that easy to adapt from Asian time zone to here. My team and I feel good about our performance; we had great action against USA”.
