Tehran, Iran, March 12, 2021 – Urmia Shahrdari ended their away match of the best-of-three final clash in the Iran Men’s Volleyball Super League on a high note after an epic comeback win against Sirjan Foulad at the Federation Hall on Friday.
The magnificent come-from-behind 3-2 (19-25, 25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 15-13) win has moved Urmia Shahrdari, the second-ranked side after completion of the 30-week preliminary round, one step closer to winning the eventual title in 2020-2021 season.
While competing in the fourth set, Masoud Ghalami of Urmia Shahrdari got an unexpected injury, forcing him to be unable to attempt a comeback for the team in the remaining match on Sunday.
Talented Pourya Yali, who shone through his exceptional skill in steering Iran to winning major titles including the 2017 Boy’ U19 World Championship, the 2019 Asian Senior Men’s Championship and the 2019 Men’s U21 World Championship plus the Best Outside Spiker award in the 2018 Asian Men’s U20 Championship, chipped in with 19 points including 18 attacks for Urmia Shahrdari. Kazemi led Sirjan Foulad with 22 markers on a losing effort.
Farhad Shahmiri and Omid Fouladivanda whistled this highly-anticipated match as the respective first and second referees, while IRIVF President Dr Mohammad Reza Davarzani watched the match onsite along with other VIP guests.
The title is now within Urmia Shahrdari’s reach and they need a must-win match in the home encounter of the final round against Sirjan Foulad on Sunday, March 14 to make a clean sweep of both matches.
According to the format of play in the final round, the two finalists have to contest home-and-away matches. To capture the Super League laurels, the team must win both matches. However, if both teams share one win apiece, the third match will be held on March 16 to decide the eventual winners.
