VICTORY FOR JAPAN, CHINA, THAILAND, IRAN ON DAY TWO OF AVC CUP FOR WOMEN

Pasig City, Philippines, August 22, 2022 – Day two of the 2022 AVC Cup for Women unfolded on Monday at the PhilSports Arena with Japan, China, Thailand and Iran defeating their respective opponents in the preliminary round.

Japan secured straight sets 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-22) against Chinese Taipei to open Day Two’s schedule of matches.

Captain and setter Mika Shibata orchestrated such wide variety of offense that went from the classically known speedy plays, while also connecting of slower paced runs.

Yuki Nishikawa scored 11 attack points as the team’s best scorer, but offense was widely distributed across the players on the floor, which helped toward Japan’s second straight win in Pool B.

Later in Pool A, China outlasted Vietnam in the tie-break, 3-2 (25-12, 25-6, 29-31,21-25,15-12), to take their second victory in the same outings.

Opposite Zhou Yetong (27 points) and outside hitters Zhuang Yushan (21 points) and Wu Mengjie (17 points) carried the team with amazing performances to help overcome the challenge of their opponents.

Back in Pool B, Thailand took their first win with 3-0 (25-9, 27-25, 25-13) against Australia.

Pimpichaya Kokram registered a match-high 16 points and showed consistency and reliability as one of Thailand’s go-to scorers.

In the Monday’s final match in Pool A, Iran opened their bid in the competition with straight sets, 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-13) against Korea.

Iran’s experience and recent silver medal achievement in the Islamic Solidarity Games provided the team good momentum coming into the competition.

“We are really motivated from our last tournament and we are trying our best to get the same results,” said Iran captain Mahsa Kadkhoda, who scored 6 points in the victory.

Aytak Salamatgharamaleki and Elahe Poor Saleh Shahdehsari were Iran’s main hitters, tallying 11 points and 10 points respectively.

Teams continue with the preliminary round until Thursday, August 25, before teams break for rest and recovery on Friday, August 26.

The quarterfinals are scheduled on Saturday, August 27, to place the Final Four teams into the semis Sunday, August 28.

The eventual champions will be determined and awarded in the finale set on Monday, August 29, at the PhilSports Arena.
