VIETNAM CROWNED WINNERS OF AVC CHALLENGE CUP

Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, June 25, 2023 – Vietnam claimed the championship title of the 2023 AVC Challenge Cup for Women after a dramatic decider, 3-2 (25-18, 25-27, 21-25, 25-20, 15-13) against hosts Indonesia in East Java’s Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gresik Gymnasium.

As the winning team in Sunday’s thrilling finale, Vietnam now qualify directly for the FIVB Challenger Cup (scheduled from July 27- 30, 2023), which serves as the promotion platform for the 2024 edition of Volleyball Nations League. 

Vietnam Captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy, who scored 23 points, many of which converted from clutch plays, was named Most Valuable Player of the championship. 

Earlier, Chinese Taipei finished in third place after 3-0 match (25-13, 25-15, 25-18) against India. The Chinese Taipei side performed with speed in transition and accuracy in attack. Chen Tzu-Ya, Chang Li-Wen, Hung Shih-Han and Wu Fang-Yu registered double-digit markers to help bag the bronze. 

Iran defeated Australia, 3-1 (25-20, 19-25, 25-18, 25-20), with Ashofteh Mona, Bagherpour Soudabeh and captain Mahsa Kadkhoda boosting their team’s numbers and momentum for a fifth place finish in Gresik City. 

Philippines finished in 7th place after a 3-1 defeat (25-14, 13-25, 25-18, 25-18) of Uzbekistan. Faith Nisperos, Shaya Adorador and captain Aiza Pontillas dealt double-digits markers in the victory. 

In Sunday’s opening match Hong Kong, China settled for 9th place with a 3-0 match (25-12, 25-12, 25-14) against Macau, China. The champion team of the 2022 edition capitalized on service pressure as means to dictate the tempo of the match. Opposite hitter To Wing Man and captain Chim Wing Lam scored 11 markers each in the victory. 

The AVC Challenge Cup has since revised its format to allocate ranking points as the competition progresses. This has signaled the entry of the participating teams into the FIVB Top 70, proving the empowerment of Asia’s national teams with the value of participating in AVC event properties. The competition has been established as an annually hosted event starting 2023.
