Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, June 25, 2023 – Vietnam braved a tough home team and the roaring home crowd to win the 2023 AVC Challenge Cup for Women after a thrilling tie-break triumph against Indonesia, 3-2 (25-18, 25-27, 21-25, 25-20, 15-13).
Sunday evening’s main event at the Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gresik Gymnasium featured an all-Southeast Asia finale, with both teams gunning for the golden ticket to the FIVB Challenger Cup.
Vietnam went on turbo-charged speed, running their offense quickly, yet equally adjusting their block defense as lightning swift as possible. They came prepared and played prepared as they faced the tough challenge of playing the home team.
Indonesia found a solution to slow down the pace of the match. They imposed pressure on their serve, which succeeded in breaking their opponents’ rhythm and momentum. They tried to set their counter-attack slowly yet accurately. They likewise improved in their block defense, improving their reflexes in lining up their blocks.
Vietnam needed a restart in the match, firming up their backcourt in passing. They had to deal with such tough serves and attacks, but they could quickly recover and counter. Head coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet signaled in a key player change, Vi Thi Nhu Quynh, who brought in a fresh lease to the offense and the momentum toward victory.
Vietnam captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy scored 23 points but sought much needed help from everyone else, on and off the court.
“Today is a good day for the team. We always support one another. I am very thankful to my teammates, our staff, our coaches. This is the reason for this victory,” she said.
Vietnam jumped into the FIVB Top 50 in Women’s Volleyball Ranking and will proceed to compete in the FIVB Challenger Cup in July 2023.
