VIETNAM WIN IN FIVE TO TAKE FINAL FOUR SLOT IN AVC CUP

Pasig City, Philippines, August 27, 2022 – Vietnam endured the decider 3-2 (19-25, 25-17, 16-25, 25-18, 15-10) against Chinese Taipei to advance to the semifinals of the 2022 AVC Cup for Women,

Captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy connected with 25 points in the match and delivered a string of points to force the turn-around for Vietnam in Saturday’s quarterfinal encounter at the PhilSports Arena.

“It really did not matter who scored the most points, or those in the most important moments. It was really a team effort,” said the Vietnamese captain.

Head coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet credited the win to two factors.

“Today, there were two things that helped us win, our defense, particularly in block (Vietnam connected with 15 blocks) and our unity on court,” he said.

Vietnam initiated their offense on Tran Thi Thanh Thuy and Pham Thi Nguyet Anh and established a good lead, which was further annexed by the opponents’ errors.

Chinese Taipei started to impose more strategic serves, not only to post aces, but also to give their opponents a tough time in the passing unit. Later on, they could adjust and line up their blocks more effectively and connect on deflections.

The Vietnamese side picked up their pace enabling the right side attack from Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh. They vastly improved in playing transition, knowing that their opponents could perform equally well in such aspect of the match.

The Chinese Taipei side needed to recall their power serves, to help gain back their momentum. They activated the middle attack with Kan Ko-Hui at the charge. Chen Tzu-Ya helped further by firing from the flanks.

As Vietnam forced the decider, it was initially a showdown from the flanks. Tran Thi Thanh Thuy eased into a good momentum scoring on both attack and block, to help Vietnam take the tie-break victory.

Vietnam await the winners of the quarterfinal encounter between Iran and Japan to determine their match-up in the semifinal showdown on Sunday, August 28. Chinese Taipei will then move into the 5th-8th semifinals bracket.
