Bangkok, Thailand, September 1, 2020 – Volleyball Australia, in consultation with Tourism & Events Queensland and City of Gold Coast, has regrettably decided to cancel the 2020 Australian Volleyball Schools Cup, Australian Volleyball League and Elite Development Camp scheduled to be held on the Gold Coast in early December, said a news release on volleyballaustralia.org.au on Tuesday.
After extensive consultation across a wide range of school, government and venue partners, this difficult decision has been made in response to a number of insurmountable challenges relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The current uncertainty regarding the opening of state and territory borders, the protocols and processes required of event owners and the potential for mass isolation and even quarantine in the event of an individual presenting with symptoms, is far too great a risk to consider proceeding with the event.
VA’s commitment to the safety of their community also played a significant role in this decision. While providing opportunities for their junior athletes to showcase their talents and develop skills on the national stage is central to Volleyball Australia’s mission, the safety and well-being of Australian players, coaches, parents, supporters, staff and volunteers is also a fundamental commitment to the participants of the sport.
VA has expressed its deep sadness to have made this decision and also apologised for any inconvenience and the considerable disappointment this outcome may cause.
However, VA has encouraged Australian fans to look forward to 2021 and the Australian Beach Volleyball Schools Cup during April 30 and May 2 and the 37th Australian Volleyball Schools Cup from December 5 to 11 on the Gold Coast.
