Udon Thani, Thailand, June 23, 2019 – The volunteers were the unsung heroes of the FIVB Beach Volleyball U21 World Championships in Udon Thani.
The support group comprised of a total of 170 volunteers from four secondary level schools and one university – all played an integral part in staging a successful week-long tournament.
“This tournament is a tournament for the volunteers,” FIVB technical delegate Joep van Iersel said. “There were so many volunteers that helped us out in this tournament. I don’t think anything is impossible here in Thailand. The volunteers were all amazing.”
Apart from the competitors, they were the major players that gave excitement to the event. They braved the heat for the entire week and faced the challenges of dealing with the demands of different areas like competition, media, protocol among others, in the quest to provide the Udon Thani hospitality. They have indeed lived up to expectation and after each long day, they have kept the beautiful smile on their faces.
Natthamon Boramakhot, a university student who volunteered as a court announcer, had good things to say about her U21 World Championship experience.
“Volleyball is big in Thailand,” Natthamon said. “This is why a lot of people are eager to take part in this tournament. Even though this is a different discipline, many of us want to experience being in a big beach volleyball tournament.
“This will be a memorable experience for the people of Udon Thani. We enjoyed being part of this event with the players, the fans, and the organisers because this is something new for us. We learned so much from this event and we hope we can have more events like this in the future.”
On Sunday, all volunteers joined the winners on centre court for a group photo – a simple but meaningful snapshot that will remind them of the great inspiration that they have given to the event.
