Beijing, China, May 23, 2021- China national women’s volleyball team departed Shanghai on Friday for the upcoming Volleyball Nations League (VNL) 2021 in Rimini, Italy.
Led by iconic head coach Lang Ping, the Chinese delegation featured 22 members including 13 players, but superstar Zhu Ting and Yuan Xinyue did not join the team.
A total of 16 teams including Rio Games champions China, defending and consecutive two-times champions the USA, former successive two-time Olympic winners Brazil, Italy, Russia, Netherlands and reigning and consecutive two-time Asian champions Japan, will compete in the women’s competition, which takes place from May 25 to June 25.
“It’s atypical this year that I have to pay close attention to players’ training and competitions,” said Lang. “We will be in a ‘bubble’ for five weeks and I’m well-prepared for that, both training and competition, and living.”
Despite the 2021 VNL is being held in a secure bubble, the surging COVID-19 situation has still raised grave concerns. After withdrawing from the competition earlier this month due to more than 20 positive COVID-19 cases in their team, Thailand had been allowed to make changes to their roster, and the revised team left for Italy as all members tested negative.
According to the competition schedule, China is due to face Korea, Japan and Thailand in the all-Asians first-week battle. China will take on Korea on May 25 to next challenge Japan the following day and Thailand on May 27.
