FIVB, VOLLEYBALL WORLD SIGN THAILAND TO HOST WOMEN’S VNL 2024 FINALS

Bangkok, Thailand, February 2, 2024 – Bangkok, Thailand has been confirmed to host the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League 2024 Finals at Hua Mark Indoor Stadium from June 20 to 23, with Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports Ms Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, FIVB General Director Mr Fabio Azevedo and AVC President Mrs Rita Suwobo jointly presiding over a press conference and signature ceremony in Chaturathit Grand Ballroom at Golden Tulip Sovereign Hotel Bangkok on Friday.

In attendance in the meeting to share their overview about Thailand’s readiness in hosting the volleyball extravaganza were Mr Kongsak Yodmanee, Governor of Sports Authority of Thailand, and Mr Somporn Chaibangyang, President of Thailand Volleyball Association, while a huge number of the media also turned up to hear the event information. 

“On behalf of Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Government of Thailand has a soft power policy to drive Thailand by means of sports competitions, aimed to reinforce the image of Thailand as the sports hub for hosting international and global sports events. The Government has realized that the Thailand women’s national volleyball team have potentials in pushing up the Thailand’s soft power policy. They have already brought fame and reputation to the country. Hosting the VNL 2024 Finals, I hope, will bring happiness and create inspiration among Thai youngsters and volleyball enthusiasts,” said the Minister.

In her speech, AVC President Mrs Subowo expressed her thanks for the supports from Thai Government and Sports Authority of Thailand. “With the support from Thai Government and Thai sports authority, I do hope that in the future, we can continue our activities throughout Asia in Bangkok and hopefully Asian teams will be well-prepared and qualify for the Olympics, in indoor and beach volleyball, in the near future.”

 

FIVB General Director Mr Fabio Azevedo confirmed in his speech that Thailand has already selected to host the VNL 2024 Finals

“On behalf of Federation of International Volleyball, I am honored to officially declare that the Volleyball Nations League 2024 Finals will be held in Thailand. This is the first time that the VNL Finals are coming to Thailand and it deserves. Why? Thailand is land of volleyball because we have great fans here, great athletes. We have great structures and full support from  the government. Thank you very much for your great, great support.”

SAT Governor Mr Kongsak was upbeat that Hua Mark Indoor Stadium is ready to organize the VNL 2024 Finals. Despite the fact that the structure at the stadium was almost 60 years old, it had undergone maintenance a few years ago and SAT had also repaired and completed a successful restoration of the stadium to ensure the longevity and safety. He has confirmed that Hua Mark Indoor Stadium is 100% ready and safe to serve as competition venue for the VNL 2024 Finals.

Mr Somporn said, “As we had a lot of experience hosting several international and world-class volleyball tournaments, I’m confident that we will run the VNL 2024 Finals smoothly and successfully. I would like to insist that the Thailand Volleyball Association will do our best and as a country in Asia, we will host the VNL Finals 2024 the best we can.” 

After that, FIVB General Director Mr Fabio Azevedo and TVA President Mr Somporn signed an agreement as a confirmation that Thailand will host the VNL 2024 Finals.

Meanwhile, a total of 16 strong teams will compete in the Women’s VNL 2024 from May 14 to June 16, with 104 matches taking place across six different countries in what is going to be the last major international tournament before the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

 

The 16 participants comprise 11 Core teams – reigning VNL champions and current world No.1 Turkey, Tokyo Olympic gold medallists USA, world champions Serbia, Brazil, China, Italy, Netherlands,  Germany, Japan, Thailand and Korea, and 5 Challenger teams featuring Poland, Dominican Republic, Canada, Bulgaria and newly-promoted Challenger Cup winners France.

 

The first week of action for the women will take place from May 14 to 19 at Antalya, Turkey and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, while Macao, China and Arlington, Texas, USA will take center stage for the second week campaigns between May 28 and June 2. The end of the Preliminary Phase for the women will be in Asia, with Japan and Hong Kong, China, hosting the matches from June 11 to 16.

The VNL 2024 will also play a major role in deciding the last national teams that will qualify for the Paris Olympics from July 27 to August 11, 2024 at South Paris Arena. The result of each match of the VNL 2024 Preliminary Phase will impact the FIVB Volleyball World Rankings, which will determine the teams to secure the last five spots in this year’s Paris Games.

 

Teams already qualified for the Paris Olympics comprised hosts France and 6 teams finishing 1-2 in the Olympic Qualification Tournaments during September 16 and 24, 2023, namely, Dominican Republic, Serbia, Turkey, Brazil, USA and Poland.

At the conclusion of the three-week preliminary phase of the VNL 2024 on June 16, top seven teams and Finals hosts Thailand, 8 teams in total, will qualify for the Women’s VNL Finals 2024 to vie for top honor at Hua Mark Indoor Stadium in Bangkok from June 20 to 23.
