“I’M BACK”: KIM CONFIRMS RETURN TO KOREAN LEAGUE

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 11, 2020 – “I’m back,” Korean volleyball superstar Kim Yeon-Koung announced at a press conference on Wednesday to confirm she will rejoin her former club Heungkuk Life Pink Spiders in the Korean League as she continues to pursue her ultimate dream of winning an Olympic medal.

Kim made her professional debut with the Korean club in 2005 and played there for four seasons. During her stint with the Pink Spiders, she led the team to four final appearances and three league title wins.

She then played in overseas leagues in Japan, Turkey and China over the next 11 years. Before her return to the Pink Spiders, Kim played two seasons at Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul and played a pivotal role in the team’s two consecutive Turkish Super Cup wins.

She will lead the Incheon-based club with her national teammates Lee Jae-yeong and Lee Dae-yeong, and Pink Spiders returnee Lucia Fresco of Argentina.

Kim, now 32, has her eyes set on winning a Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games medal and her return to Korea could play a key role as she prepares to achieve that goal. In 2012, Kim and her teammates came close to winning an Olympic medal, finishing fourth in London.

“I was thinking about how I could keep playing and maintain my form before the Olympics, and I decided coming back to Korea would be the best way to do it,” Kim said.

“Having a chance to perform was the most important element for me. I wanted to be in the best shape possible for the Olympics next year and realise my last remaining dream. The one thing I want to accomplish more than anything else is to win an Olympic medal, and I felt I needed to make sacrifices to do that.”
