KENTO LEADS CLASSY JAPAN TO EXCEPTIONAL STRAIGHT-SET WIN AGAINST SRI LANKA, SEMI-FINALS

Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, August 9, 2019 – Indomitable Japan stormed into the semi-finals of the SMM 3rd Asian Men’s U23 Volleyball Championship after a convincing straight-set 25-21 25-16 25-14 win in Hall B inside the Wunna Theikdi Indoor Stadium on Friday.

Sri Lanka mounted a strong challenge in their crucial match against Japan in the first set. Still, their determined efforts were in vain as the Japanese side came up in full strength. The Sri Lankans could not cope with the rivals’ tactics and went down to the much stronger opponents 21-25. The fired-up Japanese remained irresistible in the next two sets as they performed superbly with impenetrable defence, solid blocks and powerful attacks to capture both sets 25-16, 25-14 and match.

Kento Miyaura chipped in with 15 points for Japan including 12 attacks and 3 aces, while Lakshita Bandara led Sri Lanka with 8 points.

The Japan’s top scorer has set his team’s high hopes on winning gold medal. “We won the game today and we are physically and mentally prepared to achieve victory. We will do our best to challenge our opponents no matter which team. The level of the tournament here in Myanmar is very high and many matches were very close. However, I think a daunting task awaits us in the next matches.”
