ONE YEAR TO GO!

ONE YEAR TO GO!

Organisation of FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2022 shares plans at royal palace Het Loo

With a year to go before the opening match of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2022, a meeting was organised at the majestic Palace Het Loo in Apeldoorn to present the event, which will take place in the Netherlands and Poland from September 23 to October 15, 2022.

Nearly 100 invited guests gathered in Apeldoorn for the ‘one year to go’ meeting at palace Het Loo held by the Dutch co-organisers. Among them were representatives of the Dutch volleyball team (Myrthe Schoot, Elles Dambrink and assistant coach Francien Huurman), FIVB, Volleyball World, Nevobo, TIG Sports, the host cities of Arnhem, Rotterdam and Apeldoorn, the Province of Gelderland, 30 Gelderland municipalities, the Gelderland Sports Federation, social partners and media. The meeting was led by tournament directors Bas van de Goor (winner of Olympic gold in 1996) and Manon Nummerdor-Flier (former top player of the Dutch volleyball team).

Apeldoorn Mayor Ton Heerts opened the meeting and welcomed the guests to his city. During the afternoon and evening, several speakers were invited to share their thoughts, all of whom enthusiastically looked ahead to the first Volleyball World Championship ever in the Netherlands.

THREE BEAUTIFUL STADIUMS IN ARNHEM, ROTTERDAM AND APELDOORN
Organiser TIG Sports, known for the Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, used artist impressions to illustrate what the stadiums in Arnhem (GelreDome), Rotterdam (Ahoy) and Apeldoorn (Omnisport) will look like. The Ahoy venue in Rotterdam broke the record for the number of spectators at a volleyball match in the Netherlands in 2015, during the European Women’s Championship. 11,000 fans dressed in orange came to Rotterdam on that day to cheer for the Orange squad.

NUTRITION ON THE AGENDA
One of the important themes of the evening, and of the World Championship to come, is nutrition. An agreement was signed between the Nevobo and JOGG (Young People on a Healthy Weight) promoting healthy sports events in Apeldoorn and Arnhem. More information about the content of these agreements will be announced next week.

THE WHOLE OF GELDERLAND IS PARTICIPATING!
In addition to representatives of the Province of Gelderland, including Deputy for Sport Jan Markink, the aldermen of no fewer than 30 Gelderland municipalities were also present. In order to allow the entire province to enjoy the World Championship, all 24 participating teams will be housed in a different Gelderland municipality (or a collaboration of neighbouring municipalities). The Gelderland villages and cities will each adopt a participating country with which they will become an active part of the World Championship. More details about this project will be shared in the days to come.
