SERBIA BEAT AUSTRALIA TO REMAIN ON TRACK FOR FINAL FOUR

Serbia took down Australia in four sets to remain on track for a place in the Final Four of the 2021 FIVB Men’s Volleyball Nations League in Rimini, Italy on Monday.

Serbia took the comfortable first two sets 25-16, 25-13, but Australia, Asian silver medallists, put their acts together to fight back with superb form to clinch the third set 25-19 and narrow the margin 1-2. However, Serbia went on their spectacular attacks in the fourth set, which they won 25-15 and match.

Aleksandar Atanasijevic chipped in with 19 points for Serbia, while Petar Krsmanovic claimed 15. Oluwatobi Elliot Azeez led Australia with 12 points and James Weir added 10.

Oluwatobi Elliot Azeez said at the virtual Mixed Zone: “Positive things going forward, I think, we did a good job controlling the tenacity of our serve and when the game was playing we executed very well. It’s just a matter of consistency for further games. Serbia are a strong team, they have strong players and sometimes it’s tough to have good touches and some plays, but they are definitely a tough opponent.”

Aleksandar Atanasijevic said: “The most important thing is that we are still in the game for the Final Four. This is our main goal. The first two sets we played really good. In the third set we changed some players and we didn’t play like we expected, but the most important is that we won three points and that we managed to earn another victory. And now we are focused on tomorrow’s match against the Netherlands, which will be much more difficult than today’s game.”
