Udon Thani, Thailand, June 22, 2019 – Brazil’s Victoria Lopes Pereira and Vitoria De Souza, Russia’s Maria Bocharova and Maria Voronina, Spain’s Maria Belen Carro and Daniela Alvarez and Germany’s Svenja Muller and Sarah Schulz secured the women’s final four berths of the FIVB Beach Volleyball U21 World Championships on Saturday.
The second-seeded Victoria/Vitoria claimed their berth with a 2-0 (21-17, 21-13) win at Thung Si Mueang centre court, ending the great run of their Thai counterparts Yodsaphat Pakham and Chanthira Khanok.
“This match was very difficult because our opponents had the support of the crowd,” Victoria said. “Thailand were very good and they had a very tall player who made it difficult for us to attack. We just had to put a lot of dedication in each play for our side to win the match.”
Third seeds Bocharova and Voronina progressed to the final four after beating Peru’s Lisbeth Allcca and Medalyn Mendoza 2-0 (21-12, 21-16). The young Russian pair has proven once again that they are among the top teams and they now have the chance to continue their quest for another gold medal win, following their triumphs at the U19 World Championship and the Youth Olympic Games.
In the all-European quarterfinal matchups, German pair Muller and Schulz outplayed their Swiss counterparts Esmee Bobner and Mara Betschart 2-0 (21-16, 21-16), while Spanish duo Carro and Alvarez bested their Russian rivals Anastasiia Frolova and Aleksandra Ganenko 2-0 (21-14, 21-19).
“We are really happy because we came here to prove that we can play together because both of us are blockers,” Carro said. “It turned out pretty well and we are glad that we are improving every day. So we just need to keep working hard.”
Earlier, the four winning sides recorded straight-set victories in the round of 16. The Brazilians beat Germany’s Hannah Ziemer and Hanna-Marie Schieder 2-0 (21-10, 21-11), while the Russians routed Czech Republic’s Karin Zolnercikova and Martina Maixnerova 2-0 (21-12, 21-11) in just 25 minutes.
Carro and Alvarez trounced Argentina’s Brenda Ailen Churin and Victoria Pozzo Galdon 2-0 (21-15, 21-14), while Muller and Schulz outshined Mexico’s Silvia Emily Herdrick and Estefania Elizabeth Ibarra 2-0 (21-18, 19-21).
